News Updates today in St Francis Bay 22 August 2012

A beautiful day in St Francis Bay today.

1.  FACEBOOK GROUP - SAVE OUR ST FRANCIS

http://www.facebook.com/pages/SaveOurStFrancis/454254024597287
Save Our St Francis (SOS) is a community initiative aiming to unite all those who love St Francis to show their disappointment in the current apathy of local municipality.

Backed by the St Francis Bay Resident’s Association and other key stakeholders we aim to highlight issues and recognise those helping to solve the problems faced by St Francis, in particular potholes, storm water drainage and service delivery in Sea Vista. Save St Francis is not for profit and politically neutral.  We will aim to raise the profile of the issues our village faces using social media. We ask everyone to share their story, picture, video so that we can clearly illustrate the problems we need to solve.

2.  ST FRANCIS CONNECT ARTICLE - SAVE OUR ST FRANCIS

Dear Mickey,

I have just come back from a meeting with the St Francis Bay Resident’s Association about how we, the younger generation can get on board and help in solving the issues our town currently faces. We do not often have the time or resources to attend meeting etc but we really want to be able to help and make a difference and we are pretty sure many others who love SFB feel the same.

Out of this thought has come the idea of the “Save Our St Francis (SOS)” Crowdsourced campaign where we will use the tool of our generation, social media, to have an impact. The objective of this campaign is to unite all St Francis Bay and Cape St Francis residents to show their disappointment in the current service delivery and apathy of local municipality.

The campaign is not for profit and non-political but aims to provide one place for everyone to share their story and constructively use social media to raise our issues to the municipality and national press. It is endorsed by the St Francis residents association.

I really hope that you as one of the key communicators in our town and as the editor of St Francis Connect will support this initiative by publicizing the page http://www.facebook.com/pages/SaveOurStFrancis/454254024597287 and highlighting the campaign where possible. This will only be effective if all stakeholders in our community get on board and involved. If you have other ideas on how to stimulate this campaign please don’t hesitate to get in touch.

Further details on the campaign are below:

Objectives

  • Unite all St Francis residents to show their disappointment in current service delivery and apathy of local municipality
  • Raise profile of issues facing greater SFB to extended community, in particular the to younger generations and those living away from SFB
  • Encourage lateral thinking to find solutions
  • Highlight the issues and community approach to national press
  • Encourage all property owners to join St Francis Bay Resident’s Association as these fees are very necessary for forthcoming legal actions etc (only 745 members out of 4500 property owners)
  • Channels

    Facebook

  • Name: SaveOurStFrancis
  • Description: Save St Francis is a community initiative to raise awareness of the infrastructure issues facing our town. Backed by the St Francis Bay Resident’s Association and other key stakeholders we aim to highlight issues and recognise those helping to solve the problems faced by St Francis, in particular potholes, storm water drainage and service delivery in Sea Vista. Save St Francis is not of profit and politically neutral.
  • Use single page to bring together all voices of all colours and generations
  • Use images/video submitted by the community to highlight issues and create discussion
  • Get local companies to sponsor prizes (helpers, pothole of the week, shack of the week etc)
  • Place posters in Sea Vista with URL and show key people how to take a pic and upload to Facebook
  • Content

The content and discussion should highlight the issues constructively, with humour where possible and give kudos to those taking action while putting pressure on municipality directly and via press:

  • Facts & figures
  • Good news
  • Kudos to those helping
  • Creative use of potholes
  • Biggest potholes
  • Sea Vista issues
  • Financial facts
  • Sloppy service
  • Non working staff
  • Day in the life of the St Francis Bay Resident’s Association (show various things they are doing to move things along)
  • Links to examples of other communities taking action
  • Links to examples of municipalities solving similar issues
  • Twitter

  • Handle: SaveOurStFrancis
  • Hashtag: To put it simply, a hash tag is simply a way for people to search for tweets that have a common topic and to begin a conversation. For example #Olympics would bring up all the tweets by anyone on twitter who posted using that hashtag. We could use #saveourstfrancis
  • Post updates from content on Facebook
  • Name heros
  • Shame others
  • Communicate with national press once momentum going (Carte Blanche, Special assignment etc)
    March
  • March being planned to mayors office. Date of march tbc.
  • Plan large social media campaign for that day so those who cannot attend can voice their protest electronically (avaaz, twitter, other?)
  • Provide live updates from March via social media
  • If you have further ideas or thoughts please don’t hesitate to let me know and I hope we can count on your involvement.
    Kind regards
    Louise
