Charles Black

Charles Black is the man behind Five Elements Restaurant which is situated in the Air Park of St Francis Bay. This magnificent restaurant is surrounded by vineyards and olive groves.

Charles returned to South Africa from Washington DC to fulfill his life-long dream of opening his own restaurant in 2007. Having gained experience in the hospitality starting while he was a student at Michigan State University, he has worked in the Timbavati, West Coast, North Coast Natal and seven years managing No.1 Chesterfield Private Hotel in Cape Town.

In 2003 he relocated back to the U.S. where he managed The Goodstone Inn & Estate in Virginia (Condé Naste Best Country Retreat Nominee). His experience in the US culminated in being appointed Director of Guest Services at The Inn at Little Washington, one of only six double Five Star & Five Diamond properties in the United States.

“I love the concept that food and service should compliment each other to provide an exceptional dining experience…”

2.  ST FRANCIS VILLAGE NEWS - Welcome back, St Francis Tourism!

St Francis Tourism announced their new steering committee this week.  The committee, without further ado, took up the reigns and issued a three month business plan till the Christmas holiday season.  “We are here to stay, and waiting for miracles will not get the work done,” Tourism Officer and committee member Warren Manser said.  “We have learnt from the lessons of the past and know we can make a difference, despite lack of funding and thanks to those in love with our Village.”

The committee consists of Jo Brown, Trevor Tennant, Sarah Swanepoel, Esti Stewart and Warren Manser, who is also the Tourism Officer.  Keith Donaldson, as member of the previous committee, assured the smooth handover.First on the agenda is the renewal of St Francis Tourism membership.  “Our membership is open to all and we will only ask for a small once off fee to cover the cost of administration, a membership card and a “St Francis Tourism” sticker for business premises.  We need all businesses involved in Tourism, and not only those who could afford the high membership fees in the past.”

“Once a business is signed up, we will issue them their loyalty sticker for display as well as adequate information to assist visitors.”  Accommodation establishments will get free listings on the website, but will have to pay for the enquiry and bookings facilities, home page advertisements as well as to advertise on the popular blue map, which will also be available to all members.

The committee has placed emphasis on the importance of availability of information, and will earmark individuals in contact with the public and empower them to be able to assist visitors.  “Living in a holiday town makes us all Tourism Ambassadors, from the floor manager at Superspar to the forecore attendant at the filling station.  They will be invited to attend a workshop and given a tour of St Francis, and will receive a Tourism Officer badge.”  Businesses are encouraged to nominate staff members to fulfill this task.

Information on “what to do and where to do it” will be made available to guest houses and can be printed from the St Francis Tourism website.  “Information from whale watching to birding, from paddling to mountain biking will be included and regularly updated.  Please make sure we receive full information on upcoming events, as people like to plan their visits accordingly.”

The St Francis Tourism website remains the main tool for international marketing as well as the portal for prospective visitors to do accommodation enquiries and bookings.

“It is important to understand that St Francis Tourism should in principle be financed by the Kouga Municipality through a monthly grant,” Warren said.  “Although these grants have dried up earlier in the year, negotiations with the new Director of Tourism, Carleen Arends looks promising and we hope to have everything back on track within the next few weeks.”

“Through regular media releases we sustain awareness of St Francis and what we can offer the visitor.  We are also linked with related websites and work with the Eastern Province Parks and Tourism Board to promote all our events.”

St Francis Tourism is hosting a “Welcome back, Tourism” function on Wednesday 24 October at Legends.  “We haven’t had the opportunity to talk “Tourism” in a long time, and are looking forward to share our plans with you at the function.”

St Francis Tourism is an independent Publicity Association promoting the greater St Francis as the preferred holiday destination.  The Association is managed by a committee and the day to day running executed by the Tourism Officer, Warren Manser.

“We are thankful to Trevor and Sharon Tennant who have been sponsoring office space in the Tennant Centre, thus keeping the doors of St Francis Tourism open for the last two years. Once the grant is reinstalled, they will be paid what’s due.”
