News Updates today in St Francis Bay

So far this morning, looks a beautiful day in St Francis Bay.  It is slightly chilly but hopefully things will warm up later.  This morning there was a news click on SABC2 Morning Live news of St Francis Bay.  Hope you had a opportunity to watch or tape it.  Our little town has had quite a few 'acts of God' in the last three years, but certain that with the right assistance and plan forward, all will be fixed, showing off just how special and beautiful this town is.  Have  a lovely day further.  Herewith some local news:

1.  ST FRANCIS CONNECT ARTICLE  - The St Francis spirit will endure

The St Francis spirit will endure.

The St Francis spirit is awake, alive…and well!  Since our Sand River Bridge washed away more than a year ago the St Francis spirit has taken a bit of a knock – especially of late – if it’s not the potholes, then it is flooding – the Santareme incident, I think, was the cherry on top for most of us. Something has changed in the mood though, just in the last day or so – instead of moaning and sulking, we are encouraging each other to be positive, reminding each other why it is that we live here….how we have stood together in the past and overcome what is dished out to us.  This change of mood has been a long time coming. I believe the St Francis Business Forum is a catalyst for this mood change….so is the pressure group Save Our St Francis. There is also the St Francis Kromme Trust and last but by no means least, the long-standing SFBRPA. These are all people who look around them, see a problem and are prepared to stand up and do something about it – let us support them!

We have been guilty of spreading negativity ourselves, together with the other press, blogs and websites. Unfortunately, in this world the different media live on information they can feed their respective audiences and often it’s the controversial or banal that makes the headlines – so it happens, just to make a few more bucks. We undertake to not fall in that trap in the future.

St Francis Bay is making plans to fix itself….yes, you heard right – we are going to fix ourselves.  We are going to stand together and do something about the dune-pools … and we are going to fix our roads. Apart from the dune-pool threat, our single biggest issue is our roads. We as St Franciscans realize that the roads are our lifeblood – our tourism industry depends on it, so does the property business and in the end it affects every soul living here, rich or poor. If it affects business, it affects everyone.  We do not have all the answers but we have a great bunch of people who can help to ask the right questions – so we can work on the correct answers.

We are not despondent, we are positive! If you asked me now whether I would want to move away, to city where there may be better infrastructure, more money, more opportunity … my answer would be an emphatic NO!  What? Change this lifestyle for something else? No thanks…One runs out of superlatives trying to describe this unique village, I’m here to stay!  Come on folks, we have had enough of the negativity – Bring us solutions, not problems! Take up the Business Forum slogan: We are open for business – we sleep no more!

2.  ST FRANCIS CONNECT ARTICLE - Calamari catches are up

Calamari catches are up
There is a bit of relief for local calamari fishermen.  Calamari catches are up!  I contacted the Port Captains office to get a heads-up on the calamari situation and this time the news is good!  Port St Francis is empty at the moment…all vessels are at sea. It seems to me the Easterly helps catches?  Boats are coming in with 3-4 tons after a couple of days out…much improved from a couple of weeks ago when boats were coming back with a ton or less after 2 weeks out.  As the squid industry is a major player in the Kouga area this is great for the local economy and employment….a much needed bit of cash becoming available after a very tough winter.  We wish the industry well for the rest of the year!
