Mike is from Melkbosstrand on the West coast and ended up doing his year’s community service in Humansdorp following his graduation – He chose Humansdorp due to its proximity to Jeffreys Bay and its fabled waves. On completion of his community service stint he made the decision to settle in the area as he had grown fond of it.  Joining him in this new direction in life is his girlfriend, Erin Worthington who also doubles as his receptionist. She is currently studying towards a law degree.  They are assisted by Simoné Läufs, Dental Assistant.

His practice offers all the services usually associated with a dentist and he has the equipment and resources to take care of your dental and oral health needs.  You can contact him at 042 294 1278.

2.  ST FRANCIS CONNECT ARTICLE - The Training Centre in St Francis has a bright future ahead!

The Training Centre in St Francis has a bright future ahead!
Outcome of the 3rd meeting with EC Office of the Premier, Coega Development Corporation and Public Works

Duncan Grenfell of Coega Development Corporation presented a Project Proposal for the St Francis Restoration Project which I have attached at the bottom of this summary for those building contractors who would like to familiarize yourselves with the contents and offer comment as soon as possible.

In summary what came out of today’s meeting:

  • The community that was present at the meeting endorsed this program.
  • The project has been called the St Francis Bay Restoration project so that it is not limited to the building industry but also to repair the infrastructure such as our roads.
  • Public Works announced that road Sundays River and the Kouga region have been identified for road repairs.
  • Duncan Grenfell had a look at a very suitable factory for training facilities last week which is in preference to bringing in mobile training units. This is still to be negotiated. The factory is situated in the Industrial area.
  • Modules for building, carpentry and plumbing were presented. Contractors are encouraged to look at these modules and earmark those that would be needed for their business.
  • Provision has been made for 400 learners. Ben Rheeder has already presented CDC with a data base of 183 learners (local) which applied to build the school that did not happen in Teragonna Road.
  • Various community leaders have been approached to assist with identifying learners that are eligible and will benefit from this program before it is announced publically to avoid an influx of non residents.
  • Once the proposal has been finalized and approved, Public Works will come through to St Francis Bay and access learners and if found competent assist them to complete the enrollment forms.
  • Building Contractors have the opportunity to mentor learners in their practical. The program will pay them a stipend (an allowance). The contractor does not pay the wage or salary. The contractor is also not obligated to keep the learner on once certified.
  • All contractors can also send their employees for additional training and certification. The time spent at the training centre will at very least not interfere with the contractors program and will be designed as such.
  • It was established that there are no modules for thatching but if a Thatcher would like to facilitate such a program it would be most welcome and CDC would look into that.
  • It was also established that the Boat Building and Chokka Industry needed skills which is something that the CDC would also look into.
  • It has also been considered that with all the needs for skills, the Wind Farm and Thuyspunt that this training facility might be here for a long time to come.
  • The next step is for the CDC to refine the proposal, so any input from any industry is extremely crucial in the next couple of days. Once the proposal has been approved it is extremely difficult to change. As soon as the proposal is approved it will get presented to Public Works who are going to get the funding for this unique and pilot project and then we are on our way. Training starts in March.
